Regarding the Federal Student Loan Interest and Payment Waiver: The Student Loan Interest Freeze and payment waiver, declared by the Trump Administration, applies only to loans that are directly held by the Department of Education. The 0% interest rate does not apply to federal student loans that are serviced at the campus-level, such as those serviced by the State University of New York Student Loan Service Center (SUNY SLSC). The attached Federal Student Aid Coronavirus Q & A document provides answers to student loan repayment questions. If You Cannot Make Your Payments Due to the Impacts of Coronavirus: For Perkins Loans - Economic Hardship Deferment or Unemployment Deferment are available options: The SUNY SLSC recognizes that this is a financially challenging time for all student loan borrowers. Federal Perkins Loan borrowers who are negatively impacted by the pandemic, can request a non-interest bearing period of deferment for up to 3 months without providing supporting documentation. 1) You must email your written request for deferment to slsc@albany.edu . 2) Your email must state that you have been impacted by the Coronavirus, and as a result you are requesting either an Economic Hardship Deferment, or an Unemployment Deferment through June 30, 2020. 3) A 6-month grace period will automatically follow your period of deferment, making your next scheduled monthly payment due February 1, 2021. 4) Borrowers requesting a period of deferment, who currently have ACH: The SUNY SLSC will place a stop on the ACH process, ceasing the automated monthly debit of your student loan payment. 5) Resuming monthly ACH: You will need to notify the SUNY SLSC if you would like to resume ACH. The SLSC cannot automatically resume the automatic debiting of your account without your written consent. For Health Professions and Nursing Student Loans - Forbearance Request: Borrowers with a Nursing Student Loan, Health Professions Student Loan, Loan for Disadvantaged Students, or Primary Care Student Loan can submit an email to slsc@albany.edu requesting a period of forbearance due to the impact of the Coronavirus. You are not required to make payments to loan principal during a period of forbearance, however interest continues to accrue. See above bullets 4 and 5 regarding the suspension of ACH.
